So my baby started elementary school this week, he says it's "awesome" but that he gets bored because they are doing stuff he already knows...I figured that was a given that they would start out slow...so all this week I've been patiently waiting for his first homework assignment to come home....today....Friday of all days...it does...
Assignment (first page):
For the next two weeks we will be going over colors! Please dress your child in corresponding colors for that day!
Monday - Red
Tuesday - Blue
Wednesday - Green
Thursday - Brown
(so on and so forth)
Assignment (second page):
Attached please find a cut out of a head with your child's corresponding color (my tookie's was green), please decorate the cut out with other items that match the head and make into a face! Assignment will be due in two weeks.
.........
I was LIVID....why? Because...my son knows his fucking colors! He's known his colors in English and Spanish since he was two years fucking old! Hell when kids go to Kindergarten they are tested, my son scored a 97 out of 100...requirement of the test was to know their colors...so why the fuck...are you doing that shit now? I'm expecting some real homework...read a age appropriate book and tell us about it...I don't know, something! Anything but damned craft work! I'm disgusted beyond words every time I think about the shit.
I know that alot of these kids out here don't have people who work with them...but why does my tookie's education have to suffer? These years are important in shaping him for his academic career and I feel like if he stays in this class (which I'm sure they will try to do) a whole year will be wasted. It sucks even more because he's about to be 6 (he missed the cut off date last year so he couldn't attend) so he's already the oldest, and the biggest in his class...for these reasons, his father and I will be going to the school on Monday to see what we can get worked out...wish us luck!

If I were you, I would find out where the state board is (or the superintendents office at the least) and find out what their requirements are for each grade level. If he tested that high at entry, then chances are you can have him test into a higher grade level.
A lot of times, they initally place children based on age for maturity reasons, but if your son is well behaved and can get along with older kids ( Cause sometimes that can be an issue too. When i skipped to the first grade, I wanted to be moved back down cause they kept calling me kindergarten baby =( ..) then i would try to get him somewhere where he wont be bored and wasting his time or his brain cells.
Good luck...
girl what the hell? i'd be pissed too! wtf? first of all a color assignment? *blank stare* AND they feel it would take a whole TWO WEEKS to complete the shit? oh hell nah.
yes please go up there n tell them "you're doing it wrong." smh... hopefully he can move up a grade, it sounds like he's capable, good luck! :)
either he needs to do the work for the next grade ( like I had to do without being skipped) or something needs to be done. When kids get bored in class they begin to act out.
Bella took the words right outta my mouth mayne, 2 weeks...color assignment?? the hayle?
Lemme know how it goes with the school when you go up there
