Check Yourself

If you have a small school aged child you know they get homework that basically is your homework as well...I think it's the school's way of making sure you actually interact with your child and become involved with their school work...it's tedious when you've just come home from work and probably have homework/work to finish up on yourself but I don't mind it. 7:30-8:30 is my son's homework time for my son, we do his homework from school for 30 minutes and then we do 30 minutes of homework that I made for him (Math, Science, Spanish, and English on specific days) because I don't want my son to 'tread water' in school, I want him to excel...some people don't care, I however care very much.

"Uhhh okay Epitome, is there a point to this blog or what?" <---you being rude YET again *eyeroll*

STORY TIIIIIME!!!

My hood rat friend...

"*sigh* Not this bitch again." <---you

I was on the phone with her the other day and she was doing homework with her daughter (a big no no in my book but she's her daughter's parent, I am not) her daughter's homework is about the water cycle (precipitation, condensation, evaporation, etc)

Now I remember this from more so from one of my high school science lasses but I remember that it was touched on in elementary school as well so I'm listening to my hoodrat friend read the questions to her daughter...her daughter doesn't know the answers (she's in 2nd grade) and then I hear my hoodrat friend being to yell...

"How you don't know the answers?!? This is your work not mine! If you don't understand the work then you need to raise your hand and ask your teacher for help because that is her job not mine!"

I for one am SHOCKED! More than likely her daughter had just learned about this stuff that day or maybe the day before so for her 7 year old to be expected to know this information like the back of her hand was a ridiculous concept.

"Stop yelling at her, read the question again and I'll help you." -me

"When you see water droplets on the side of a glass this is called what?" -her

"It's condensation, explain to her that condensation is like when humans sweat, when you put humans into an area that is warmer than their body temperture we sweat and when you put a glass of water in an area that is warmer than the termperture of the water the glass sweats...that is condensation." -me

She explains it to her daughter.

"Oooooooh." -her daughter

"She needs to ask her damn teacher any questions cause I don't know this shit, she come home and think I'm gonna be able to help her she gonna be outback." -her

Sad.

If she didn't know the information (which was really quite simple in my opinion) why the fuck would you yell at a 7 year old for not knowing it? If anything you should yell at your damn self because if your 7 year old is bringing this home then you being almost 27 years old should have seen this information at least once in your life...right? And even if you don't remember the information which I cannot even fault because really most of the information we learned in school we haven't used since we took a test on it...why not...I don't know...GOOGLE it! It's not like you don't have internet (seeing as though you pulled up youtube one night and showed me all this information about Nicki Minaj *eyeroll*) so instead of looking like an idiot in front of your daughter and your friend you look like you know what you're talking about.

Of course I didn't tell her that because it would have just fell on deaf ears anyway.

I just so wish she could do better.

Yes, homework time is imperative but sadly I find myself slipping in this arena sometimes. Like you said, a lot of times we have our own homework/business to take care of; many evenings I'm doing laundry, cooking dinner, checking/paying bills or even in school. My son is 8 years old and in the third grade. Although he is in an afterschool program that dedicates an hour to homework time, the proctor/counselor probably doesn't have time to look at each child's homework. -_____-
However, we do read, I'm teaching him cursive and fractions so that he can be ahead of the curve when it comes to classwork. Parents need to understand that it is our job to teach our children first! The teacher's job is secondary. A lot of times "hood" mothers don't realize how much our children love us and look up to us unconditionally until that bond is slowly broken down by ignorance and selfishness.

My 2 is too and we have homework time. Granted its just reviewing Spanish colors and his body parts as well as numbers and words, but still. My parents always made time for us when it came to homework. You are doing a great thing by not wanting him to "tread water" in school.

I always say it's good to keep a hood friend cuz they keep you grounded.

Maybe school wasn't your home girl's forte. Maybe she didn't even THINK about using google (or you tube, I'd bet they have some magic school bus cartoons about that).

Hey..it was prob good you were on the phone with her so you could explain what was going on to lil mama.

@ZAG: so many parents (blacks espeially) don't realize that it is our job to teach our children...this is why we have such a high rate of our children not succeeding/dropping out/etc, because education starts at home.

@Nightfall: that she is smh

@Khaki: and I'm sure her mother isn't the brightest bulb in the box either...sad.

@Monique: That's great! You have to work with your children from day one...this is where many other races get a "leg up" on "us", somehow it seems we don't believe education starts until our little ones hit Kindergarten, by then they are already behind the curve...significantly.

@Likeitornot: It definetly was not her forte (she took pre algebra for 4 years) but dang I figured common sense would assist her in making the right decision but of course, like grandma used to say, common sense ain't really so ommon.

@Reggie: I sooooooo wish that people had to pass a test in order to gain a permit to children...could you imagine how much of a better place would be?!??!
